Healthcare Co-Management Leadership Development
"I continue to hear praise from our medical and administrative leaders about the quality of this Co-Management Leadership program and of Linda's remarkable expertise as a facilitator. Our folks just love the ability to train together in an environment that deals with practical issues from their own organization and that highlights the advantages of collaboration between medical and other leaders." Rod McFadyen, MD, FRCPC, CCFP(EM),
Medical Director, Continuing Professional Development for Physicians, Vancouver Island Health Authority
Client:
Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), Continuing Professional Development for Physicians (CPDP) and the University of Victoria's Division of Medical Sciences
Project: Co-Management Leadership Series 2006–2009
Linda worked with the Program Planning Committee headed by Dr. Rod McFadyen (Director, CPDP) to develop and deliver an in-house customized Leadership Development Program for Senior Leaders, Portfolio Executive Directors, Executive Medical Directors, Program Directors and Medical Directors, selected undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Faculty Leaders and Medical Site Chiefs and Managers.
This practical, hands-on series brought medical and non-medical leaders together to learn and apply their knowledge to their own work situations. Physicians earned CPDP credits through the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The series offered five two-day training sessions: Meeting Management and Facilitation Skills, Performance Management, Conflict Management, Negotiation, Change Management and Strategic Leadership.
Outcomes:
- Common themes from on-going program evaluations: advantages of bringing medical and administrative leaders together to work on common issues with real-time problems, high quality and experience of faculty, more practical and relevant that other generic “training programs” and "a must for all new leaders."
- Quarterly Medical Leadership Forum (attended by Medical and Senior Administrative Leaders) to discuss and resolve organization-wide/strategic issues.
- The Health Authority MAC and the local MACs have developed new medical rules, clarifying committee membership, structure, roles and responsibilities.
- More efficient and effective MAC meetings. Skilled facilitative leadership and membership.
- Better working relationship between Medical and Senior Administrative Leaders.
- Increased physician engagement.
- Greater attendance/participation at quarterly Senior Leadership Sessions.
- Larger pool of skilled physician leaders.
- Feedback indicates a strong interest in continuing the series as well as developing "skill refresher" webinar sessions.
